On this Day in History:
1865, almost two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops in Texas freed more than 250,000 of the last remaining slaves, marking the end of slavery in the United States. While equity and prejudice are still things we struggle with, Juneteenth (known by many names, including Freedom Day and Emancipation Day) is a day to celebrate; no one should live their life unwillingly bound to the will of another, especially for simply being born Black.
Whether you attend church, see a parade, or just have a barbeque like I did, celebrate the freedom that was attained that day, and remember that we have to fight for equality ✊
